What is Self-Esteem?
It is estimated that 85% of Americans have low self-esteem. Self-esteem is the way we think about ourselves and the confidence we place in our worth or abilities. People with strong self-esteem like themselves and place value on their achievements. Your self-esteem likely has ups and downs: somedays, you feel positive and self-assured; other days, you’re depressed, and self-doubt clouds your every move. While everyone lacks confidence now and then, people with low self-esteem feel unhappy or unsatisfied with themselves the majority of the time.
Low self-esteem can arise for a variety of reasons. However, without treatment, low self-esteem can have long-term damaging effects. These could be smaller-scale occurrences like not speaking up in class or work meetings, for example.
Or they could be longer-term threats, like relationship problems or negative thoughts that result in self-damaging behavior. At Evolution Wellness, our therapists for low self esteem can help.
