In our society today, we have been conditioned to believe that being vulnerable is a bad thing. That if we are out of our comfort zone we are anxious and fearful. One of our favorite speakers and authors, Brené Brown, discusses how vulnerability can change your life positively, in her book “The Power of Vulnerability”.
In order to make new connections and relationships, you have to be vulnerable. Being vulnerable does not always mean putting yourself in stressful situations and opening up about some of the deepest parts of yourself. Being vulnerable can mean, stepping out of your own mind to understand where your partner is coming from. Or going to a singles event after a recent divorce.
As Brené Brown says, “vulnerability sounds like truth and feels like courage. Truth and courage aren’t always comfortable, but they’re never weak”.
Here are some of the ways you can be more vulnerable and open in your everyday life:
- Accept your worth
Know how worthy you are, and accept yourself through all the ups and downs. In order to become comfortable with vulnerability, you must also feel comfortable with yourself (flaws and all).
- Fight your triggers by knowing what they are.
Understand your triggers – what they are and where they come from. What do you fear, love, and long for? What holds you back from being your best self? Write down your emotions throughout the day. When you feel angry and why this anger came about. When you feel excited and happy, and what triggered that happiness within you? Practicing this will help you manage your emotions and not allow others to affect them negatively.
- Stop yourself when you’re resisting.
Reaching a vulnerable moment in time can feel scary and overwhelming. When a moment like this approaches you, try going into it with open arms, rather than tensing up and running in the opposite direction.
- Trust that you can deal with the outcome, no matter what.
You are strong and brave. Know that you can overcome any obstacle thrown in your direction – no matter what the outcome is, know you CAN and WILL get through it.
